Provenance:Freeman's, Philadelphia, sale of December 12, 1996, lot 733.Acquired directly from the above sale.Lot Note:Artist and musician Francis Cresson Schell studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts with Thomas Eakins and Thomas Anschutz. He later became an instructor for the Academy, worked as an artist and art director for The Leslie's Weekly and completed illustrations of numerous historical events including the Spanish-American War. His works are in many collections including those of the Philadelphia Sketch Club, the Library of Congress as well as the White House.
